Wages Share of Economy Reaches 43-year Low

13 June 2008, 4:21pm

The wages share of the Australian economy has dropped to 53.2% in trend terms, the lowest level since March 1965, when it was 53%.

The National Accounts data, released last week by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS), show that the wages share of the economy dropped in trend terms from 53.4% in the December quarter last year to 53.2% in the March quarter this year.

The profit share, at 27% in March, is only slightly down on the record of 27.3% reached last year.

Meanwhile, Executive salaries continue to soar to record levels as the corporate sector continues to ignore the pleas of Government to set an example on wage restraint.
