The Construction, Forestry, Mining and Energy Union of Australia works hard to safeguard the health and safety of its members and gain the fair and just wages and conditions. However we also have a proud history of community involvement and support - leading the reconstruction effort after Cyclone Tracy devastated Darwin in 1974, is just on example. This page barely scratches the surface of what we do. We hope that after reading it, you may see that we help build communities in many ways both in Australia and overseas.
CFMEU Exceeds One Million Dollar Pledge to Victorian Bushfire Appeal
Tragedies such as these remind us all of the collective essence of the human condition.
It is this impulse to band together and help those in need that is the wellspring of trade union activity.
In this light all three Divisions of the CFMEU have been hard at work raising the one million dollars that the union pledged to the Victorian Bushfire Appeal.

The John Cummins Memorial Fund for Cancer Patients
The John Cummins Memorial Fund has been established by the by the Construction and General Division Victorian Branch with Melbourne Community Foundation (MCF) to honour the memory and legacy of John Cummins. John was 58 when he died on 29 August, 2006 of a brain tumour. John dedicated his life to working people, in particular construction workers. The purpose of the Fund is to honour and continue in some small way John’s lifetime work.

CFMEU volunteers build house for Aboriginal community opposed to the NT Intervention
At our National Conference in 2008 the meeting unanimously passed resolution calling for the repeal of the Northern Territory intervention legislation and for the Government to sit down with Indigenous communities to co-operatively tackle the issues facing them. Since then the CFMEU has been active in the campaign working with groups such as the Stop The Intervention Collective to expose the racism inherent in the Intervention.

Queensland BLF 2009 Charity Touch Football day
The Touch Footy competition this year surpassed all of our previous great efforts. The colour, the carnival atmosphere of “tent city” and the attitude of al the participating teams set the scene for the best day ever.

Rescue Helicopter Service
Since 1991, the CFMEU Mining & Energy Division has sponsored the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service, operation in the Hunter, Mid North Coast, New England and North West regions.

SIDS and Kids provide family support services and health promotion programmes to communities throughout Australia and drive research to stop Aussie kids dying of this hearbreaking syndrome.

Manna Industries Soup Kitchen
In 2004, the West Australian Construction & General Branch of the CFMEU was approached by Beb and John Lowe of Manna Industries for assistance with their soup kitchen for the homeless.

After the successful independence referendum in 1999, CFMEU NSW, Victoria and National Offices played the central role in organising rallies in support of the new nation of East Timor.

Campaign to Recover Stolen Wages
Andrew Vickers, General Vice President of the Mining & Energy Division of the CFMEU, handed over a donation of $55,000 to Charmaine Batten and Ravina Waldrewn from the Foundation for Aboriginal and Islander Research Action (FAIRA) to fund its 'Award Wages For Indigenous Persons Project'.

Sending Child Labourers to School
Since 1997, the CFMEU's Forestry & Furnishing Products Divison, Pulp and Paper Branch has funded the operation of three schools in India for child labourers.

Lauren Huxley Appeal
Lauren Huxley's long road to recovery, following a brutal attack in her Northmead home in November 2005, was given a boost, when union members from Sydney building sites presented the family with a cheque to help rebuild her life.

South Australian Forestry Organiser Travis Lawson (pictured) has been running a radio show on 5GTR FM 100.1, broadcasting in the Mount Gambier area since April 2006.
